The objective of this module is to explain the benefits of stakeholder involvement in the planning and management of protected areas, and further, to teach how to collaborate with local stakeholders and engage them in participating in the development of PAs.

This module explains what stakeholders are and why stakeholder participation in the development of protected areas is important; it also shows what benefits arise from participation. Stakeholder participation differs from area to area and from country to country; in this module we will learn what the levels of participation are and how a participation process should be structured. Parallel to the protection of areas, conflicts often arise with certain stakeholders; therefore, this topic will focus on conflict management.
